GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The Pamlico County Historical Association envisions a heritage
center where the rich history of Pamlico County can be restored
and yet come alive for students residents, tourists, and
newcomers to the county. The heritage center will ensure the
preservation of some of the rich history of people whose lives
were molded by rich soils, abundant forests and the numerous
waterways of our coast.
FROM THE BEGINNING

The Pamlico County Historical Association was organized and
chartered with the State of NC in 1968; the end result of a Local
History Study Class organized through the Continuing Education
Department of Pamlcio Technical Institute.  The initial need for
the class was started by George Peacock, the high school history
teacher who was hired as the instructor and Larry Prescott,
Director of the Evening Programs who handled all arrangements
for PTI.  Paul Johnson, President of the Institute was very
supportive of this class.
From this class of about 20 local individuals, the beginning of
researching, writing and preserving Pamlico County's History
began.  With the assistance from the NC Department of Archives
and History, the association was officially formed, initially in the
old wing of the Alliance High School used as a classroom for PTI,
a piece of history itself.  The fiirst officers were Larry Prescott,
President, George Peacock, Vice President and Ruth Lee,
Secretary Treasure.
The stated purpose for the Association was to preserve the
history of Pamlico Coiunty and to establish a museum.  Both of
these purposes have been accomplished.  The original Registry
of Deeds building was moved and was the first museum site
until the new building was built.
In 2008-2009, thanks to generous benefactors and a grant from
the USDA we were able to construct a museum and begin adding
buildings to our planned heritage village. The museum was
officially opened on August  28th 2009.  The heritage village now
has been a working blacksmith shop and a one room school
house.  Two other buildings have been moved to the site; one of
which is a barber shop located in Grantsboro for over
50 years.
The intent is to develop a heritage village that embraces Pamlico
County's rich heritage of farming, fishing, and forestry that will
become a regional education center and visitor attraction.
